Dr Ajay Chakravarthy
I am a researcher at the University of Southampton IT Innovation Centre. The IT Innovation Centre is an applied research centre advancing a wide range of information technologies and their deployment in industry and commerce. Part of the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, it is located on the Science Park, 5km from the main university campus.
My research activities include the use of semantics (Semantic Web Technologies) and socio collaborative approaches (Web 2.0) for knowledge management in the digital media sector and for Future Internet related research projects. I work on various EU and TSB funded research projects e.g ICON . I am also working on projects funded by the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP), see ENVIROFI. Further, I am investigating the use of semantics in adaptive grid based service oriented architectures; see SERSCIS. I am the system modelling work package leader in SERSCIS. My other research interests include Future Internet technologies, image, text and cross media annotation, social networking, ontology modelling and reasoning, natural language processing, machine learning, content based image retrieval.
Before moving to Southampton, I completed my masters in advanced computer science from the University of Sheffield and also completed a PhD in computer science (Title: Towards Cross Media Document Annotation) from the University of Sheffield under the supervision of Prof Fabio Ciravegna. I recieved full EPSRC funding from the AKT project. I passed my PhD viva in September 2010. During the PhD, I investigated the use of semantic web and semantic web technologies for knowledge acquisition. The cross media annotation system which I developed during the PhD is called AKTive Media. It is an open source project and is available as a free download. See Sourceforge. AKTive Media has been downloaded more than 3000 times. My research was applied to a variety of use cases including the Aerospace and Archaeology domains. AKTive Media was also used in several large academic research projects such as AKT, Memories for Life (Photocopain), and E-Response to name a few. A branch of my research work aided in setting up a knowledge management spin off company K-Now at the University of Sheffield.
