Research

My main research interests are in semantic annotation of documents, particularly non-text documents. My main motivation is to be able to produce working systems using the very latest research tools that are being developed in the IAM Group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. Non-text media is much more difficult to automatically produce semantic annotations for, because there are so many different representations of any particular annotation, and vectors produced from these representations are usually very susceptible to variations in the representation.

Projects

I am currently involved in the following projects:

My projects page gives more information about these projects, as well as previous projects I have worked on.

I also work on various consultancy projects through ECS Partners and through the Southampton Statistic Sciences Research Institute and have worked with the BBC and Psiphon.

Other Things

I am currently passionate about Celtic folk music and I'm learning to play fiddle, concertina and accordion while also improving my piano and guitar playing in this area of music. I enjoy playing with other people in sessions in pubs or at sessions held at home. I have just joined a new Celtic music band playing fiddle. I also accompany a talented young singer, Fiona Harris.

I like to dance salsa and ballroom (although don't get around to it much these days), and also love photography and producing music. I also enjoy sailing with my family in and around Poole Harbour.

You can find videos of me playing music and sailing at my YouTube channel.
