Generic Eprint Archive Hosts for Researchers Whose University Has Not Yet Provided Them?

Stevan,
I remember you offering to partition off a space for an archaeology
archive in CogPrints in case the journal Internet Archaeology couldn't find
an eprints server closer to home. If you or other archive hosts are
willing to do this, and if cross-archive searching makes the actual
location of content irrelevant, then why not launch an archive specifically
for those works with no other convenient home? Authors whose institutions
are slow to accept the idea of an eprints server, and whose disciplines
have no disciplinary archive, could deposit their works in the "common
archive". As it grows large, new ones could be added. In general I
dislike creating miscellaneous collections when we could make better
organized collections instead, but this may be a case when an exception is
justified. Wouldn't the launch of common archives accelerate the growth
and acceptance of (1) the OAI network, (2) self-archiving, and (3) free
online scholarship in general?

you wish.)
