Regarding the question of what percentage of items in ZORA (Zurich
Open Repository and Archive) are free fulltexts, it is too early to
do detailed analysis, because many submitters are in the process of
depositing papers now. ZORA is not only an Open Access platform but
also developed into the publication database of the University of
Zurich that feeds into the University's Annual Reports, as decided by
the Executive Board of the University. For this reason, an
increasingly broad range of publications are being deposited into
ZORA, including monographs and edited scientific works (publications
that were edited by one or several researchers of the University). In
these two cases, fulltexts mostly cannot be deposited in ZORA with
free access, for obvious reasons.
A preliminary estimate shows for the entire ZORA live archive on
December 10th, 2008:
Total number of items in the archive: 4411
Fulltexts with free access: 1556, this is about 35%
In addition, some fulltexts are still under embargo and will be free
later.
It is our impression that different disciplines differ in the
percentage of (free) fulltexts. It will always be possible to find
samples where this percentage is particularly high or low ˙˙ social
science and the humanities tend to be at the low end, partly because
of the reasons mentioned above.
Regarding your question about the total refereed journal output, this
is still too early to address, because many submissions are done
these days and months. We expect this process of deposition to be
finished in March and should then be able to calculate numbers.
