Kid-sib and computation

Firstly, thank goodness for Kid-sib!
Secondly, while symbol manipulation and neural nets seem
fairly straightforward, to me computation does not. It
appears that computation is the next step up from symbol
manipulation. Are algorithms applied to symbols to solve
problems, is this computation? Is there a kind of hierarchy
in which symbol manipulation is the most simple and neural
nets are the most complex forms of problem solving?
