There are two ways to provide open access to your research output:

(1)(“Gold”) Publish your article  in an Open Access (OA) Journal. An OS Journal makes all its articles accessible online for free, and recovers its costs from author/institution publication fees per article published, instead of user/institution access-tolls for accessing the journal.

Of the 24,000 peer-reviewed journals that are published worldwide, however, fewer than 1000 (<5%) are OA. So this “golden” road to OA is not enough.

(2) (“Green”) If there is no suitable OA journal for your article, publish it in a conventional Toll Access (TA) (>95%) but also self-archive it in your university Eprint Archives.
