  Biography

I was born in Northampton in Febuary 1981. I grew up in Galley Hill, a suburb of Milton Keynes, but moved to Tadley in north Hampshire in 1989. I studied for my GCSE's at the Hurst Community School, and attended Queen Mary's College in Basingstoke to study A-Levels.

During the summer vacation between lower and upper 6th form, I recieved a Nuffield Science Bursary during which I undertook research into subjective image quality assessment. This research was carried out within the Motorola European Research Laboratory under the supervision of Dr Paola Hobson and Dr Kevin McKoen.

After completing my A-Level studies, I was invited to return to Motorola for the summer vacation period to work as a research assistant.

Following on from A-Levels, I moved to Southampton to study for a bachelors degree in aerospace engineering. During the vacations within the degree programme, I returned to work at Motorola, undertaking research into a number of technologies related to digital images and video, including projects investigating DRM technologies for digital video, and the quality assessment and optimisation of H.263 and MPEG4 video transmitted over lossy channels.

I graduated from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Southampton in July 2002, with a BEng (First Class Honours) in Aerospace Engineering (Systems). My final year project was carried out in collaboration with Motorola and was entitled "Recognition of Traffic Objects from Aerial Images" - briefly, the task was to develop an automated method for determining the traffic condition on a road from a sequence of images taken from a helicopter or aircraft.

Following the completion of my undergraduate degree, I undertook a PhD in the IAM group of the School of Electronics and Computer Science under the supervision of Professor Paul Lewis. My PhD, jointly funded by the EPSRC and Motorola UK Research Laboratory, was titled "Saliency for Image Description and Retrieval".

I successfully defended and completed my PhD in February 2006. Since then I have been working on a variety of projects as a research fellow, and now senior research fellow within the School of Electronics and Computer Science and building my own independent research profile in the area of intelligent multimedia analysis and retrieval techniques.
