I built a look-up table based non-linear image processing system to make 'sketches' in real time. This was an extension of work by John Robinson on low-data rate (modem) videoconferencing for the deaf.

Here you see the 1980's technology! No Windows! Three framestore boards to capture RGB separately. A Force Systems 68000 running at 8MHz with 128k of RAM. But with my hardware (sticking out on the left) it did 25 frames a second or around 110 million LUT operations a second. The CPU itself could take 20s per frame. Don't forget all this was 1983-7!
