Cover versions of Queen music by other bands. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: ajy@doc.ic.ac.uk (Andrew Young) There were some two spoof records in 1988 by a band called Morris Major and the Minors. They were a couple of comedians who made a few records to poke fun at music - very much like Bad News, only pop rather than rock. John was a friend of theirs and got involved. He appeared in both their videos, and may have produced or played bass, but I am not sure. The records were: "Stutter Rap (no sleep till bedtime)" which was a Beastie Boys spoof. John appeared in the video in a long blue wig, miming to a sizzling guitar break. He then appeared asleep in bed while the others sat next to him discussing what time they went to bed. "This Is The Chorus" which was a Stock/Aitken/Waterman spoof. John appeared in the video dressed as Rick Astley serving tea to the record producers (RA used to be SAW's tea boy I think) When the whole band did the Radio 1 interview in 1989, John said there was a third thing in the pipeline. This never appeared. Other Deaky things: He played bass on "It's an Illusion" on Roger's "Strange Frontier" album and produced both of the remixes of "I cry for you" which were the b-sides of the 7" and 12" of "Strange Frontier". He is reported to have played bass on some of "Shove It" but I don't know which tracks. He is supposed to have worked with Minako Honda in 1988, but I've never heard this track. There is the track(s) recorded with Errol Brown of Hot Chocolate in the late 70s(?) but these were never released. He also played on "How Can I Go On" on Freddie's "Barcelona" album and contributed backing vocals to the chorus in "Hey Hey Bad News" by Bad News. One mega-rare thing that was released was a single called "Picking Up Sounds" by Man Friday and Jive Junior - in about 1984. I don't know anyone who has this - if you have mail me and we'll do a swap! Live things he has done since 1986: 5/6/88 - Together with Brian, they played with the 'supergroup' at the Prince's Trust charity concert at the Albert Hall. John was only on for a few songs, Brian much more. 4/12/88 - Together with Brian, played an encore with The Cross at the Fan Club Christmas Party. 18/9/93 - Together with Roger, played 7 Queen songs at the Cowdray Park charity concert. Didn't come back on to play with the 'supergroup'. >And is there anywhere a John Deacon solo project-probably not, but >I live in hope I doubt it. The single by the Immortals is probably as close as you will get. By all accounts, John has taken the breakup of Queen much worse than the others. It was apparently an effort to get him to play the Tribute concert (he even went on holiday during the rehearsals and Neil Murray had to stand in!). Jacky at the fan club said that the tribute concert "gave him back the buzz", but it didn't seem to last long! At the Cowdray Park concert, he was apparently quite keen to play the Queen songs, but not at all interested in playing with the other bands And the last I heard, he has a sixth child on the way! (due January) The fifth (Luke) was only born last February, so maybe when he "got back the buzz" it wasn't the buzz we think! Andy.
