Assistive Technologies and Universal Design - Info 6002

Introduction

Assistive Technologies (AT) are power to disabled individuals by which they can perform tasks which may not have been possible otherwise. Technologies, devices or software's design to help disabled people comes under AT. AT provide power to peoples with disabilities, with short term injuries, age old peoples to perform task with little or no help like normal peoples. Different AT are available but not all serves the purpose intended. They can be assessed by their accessibility and usability. Accessibility is ability to access. Usability is the easiness to use the system. Usability should not be confused with the accessibility, usability is the broad term deals with how easily or how well user can use, utilize or learn the system or product to achieve particular goal.

Disabilities leads people to use AT, they covers wide range of physical or sensory impairments which hinders normal body functions. Disabled persons have problem using web applications or software's like normal people and AT will help them to use system like normal people.

One of the important terms in this report is web accessibility which is an ability that makes people with disability to use web like normal people with little or no help. With web accessibility disabled people can perceive and interact with web. Web accessibility allows access to person with disabilities with low vision, hearing, physical problem, cognitive, neural disorder, temporary injuries and age old peoples. Web accessibility allows disabled people to contribute to the society.
