Systems & Networks Helpdesk
- Providing front-line programming support and advice to undergraduate students
- Supporting undergraduate systems & networks
- Installing, configuring and maintaining undergraduate Linux and Macintosh workstations
- Administering file store allocation to undergraduates for shared and project space
- Providing reliable backups for the undergraduate servers and
filestore
- Maintaining network HP printers, including network and server configuration. (All UG printers, and some staff ones)
- Assisting in the production of the annual undergraduate DVD-ROM
- Maintaining the undergraduate web pages and Wiki
- Maintaining a comprehensive online archive of past school examination papers
- Highly involved in the design and planning of the proposed new computing teaching labs
General
- Assisting with maintenance of school infrastructure systems & networks
- Maintaining the School's computer accounts system
- Partially responsible for staff/infrastructure backups
- Providing second-line and some front-line support for staff and research students
- Responsible for some backbone networking admin, including activating network connections, and allocating IP addresses
- Responsible for creating email distribution lists and assisting with the running of the school's email service
- Liasing with CSLib on account creation, hardware specification and acceptable use policy
- Dealing with systems abuses, such as illegal, offensive or copyrighted materials
Other Responsibilities
- Maintaining the MailScanner Quarantine Retrieval Service
- Running the IBM-sponsored Linux Challenge project
- Assisting with design and implementation of Programming Principles courseworks
- Providing feedback to staff on some of the courework they have set
- Demonstrating and lecturing in Linux, System Administration, Java and program debugging
- Assisting with design and implementation of the probity.org project
