"Knowledge management support for enterprise distributed systems" |
Y-H.Chen-Burger,
Y.Kalfoglou In this chapter
we address the problem of increased information processing needs for web
applications using a semantic based formal framework (ADP) that makes
use of promising technologies to enable knowledge generaiton and retrieval.
We argue that this approach is cost effective, as it reuses and builds
on existing knowledge and structure. It is also a good starting point
for creating an organisational memory and providing knowledge management
functions. |

"Using ontologies to support and critique decisions" |
Y.Kalfoglou
In this paper I address the issue of decision making support using ontologies. Supporting decision making in the working environment has long being pursued by practitioners across a variety of fields, ranging from sociology and operational research to cognitive and computer scientists. A number of computer-supported systems and various technologies have been used over the years, but as we move into more global and flexible organisational structures, new technologies and challenges arise. In this paper, I argue for an ontology-based solution and present some of the early prototypes we have been developing, assess their impact on the decision making process and elaborate on the costs involved. . Y-H.Chen-Burger,
Y.Kalfoglou In this paper we address the problem of providing a practical and holisitc approach to knowledge management within an organisation. Our focus is on the connection with existing business practices and corporate memories. We present an integrated three-dimensional knowledge management approach that supports innovative semantics technologies. Its automated formal methods allow us to tap into modern business practices and capitalise on existing knowledge. It closes the knowledge management cycle with user feedback loops. Since we are making use of reliable existing knowledge and methods, new knowledge can be extracted with less effort comparing with another method where new information has to be created from scratch. "A formal foundation for ontology alignment interaction models" |
M.Schorlemmer, Y.Kalfoglou,
M.Atencia In this journal paper we elaborate on a formal foundation for ontology alignment. Our basis is the use of an information theoretic approach backed up by interaction models. This extension is crucial in a distributed and dynamic environment like the (Semantic) Web where most of the ontology alignment takes place. We explain and present examples of different uses of this foundation in the context of scientific literature assessment and ranking. Finally, we give examples of how this formalism can be delpoyed in interaction models to help heterogeneous agent coordinate their actions. "Knowledge society arguments revisited in the semantic technologies era" |
Y.Kalfoglou In this journal paper I analyse the impact of semantic technologies in the knowledge society. I review the arguments made for and against a knowledge society from a technology standpoint. The focus is on large scale applications of semantic technologies on the Web and its ambitious extension, the Semantic Web. I argue for a greater role of social networks in a knowledge society and I explore the recent developments in mechanised trust, knowledge certification and speculate on their blending with societal institutions. These form the basis of sketched roadmap for enabling technologies for a knowledge society. Y.Kalfoglou,
H.Alani, M.Schorlemmer, C.Walton In this constructive critiquing ISWC paper we elaborate on four commonly overlooked issues in the SW community, namely agency coordination, mechanizing trust, robust reasoning and semantic interoperability. We argue that although these areas are representing big scientific challenges which might take time to tackle, as engineers we have to find ways of coping with them in a distributed environment like the SW. We critically review work done to date and point to areas where solutions to these problems could come. We paint an honest picture of today's landscape of research in the SW and argue for the importance of tackling these four areas in an holistic fashion in order to materialise the vision of the SW and propose a change of course in research and development focus to help us deliver the SW faster and easier. Y.Kalfoglou In this ICKEDS paper I revisit the role of ontologies in supporting decision making at an organisation. I use two example cases from deploying ontologies to support decision making as an integral part of an organisational memory; and used as oracles at the design phase of a software module where the formal ontology is used to verify the correctness of the software produced with respect to axiomatised domain knowledge. I speculate on the effort involved and give pointers for cost estimation and ease of reuse. We present exemplar cases from three domains, using the PIF ontology, EcoLogic specifications, the AIRCRAFT ontology, and the PhysSys ontology. Each case presents a different use of our mechanism: checking the conformance of specifications to ontologies, augmenting the specifications with ontological constructs, and check the ontological constraints themselves for correctness using meta-level axioms. All these are operationalised from within the multi-layer architecture we propose. We also give the mathematical foundations for error specification and link this work to previous work in the area of verification and validation of formal specifications in KBSs. Position paper presented at the panel: "Meta-knowledge: does it confuse or complicate knowledge maintenance?". In this SEKE short panel discussion position paper I argue for the role of formal ontologies in software engineering. "A case study in applying Ontologies to augment and reason about the correctness of Specifications" |

Y.Kalfoglou,
D.Robertson, In this SEKE paper we show how formal ontologies can augment software specifications and how they can check them for conceptual errors. The example case we use is adopted from Luqi & Cooke and it concerns an aircraft defence prototype which we augmented with constructs from the AIRCRAFT ontology at USC/ISI. We also show how the error checking mechanism we presented in earlier publications can be deployed to verify correct use of these constructs in the specification. "Use of Formal Ontologies to Support Error Checking in Specifications" |
Y.Kalfoglou,
D.Robertson, In this EKAW paper we present a generic mechanism for deploying ontological constraints checking in specifications. This paper is a summary of the '98 technical papers and the example case used is that of state transition ecological model. A schematic representation of the proof tree while detecting errors is provided along with a multi-layer extension to the mechanism. In Proceedings of the 11th European Workshop on Knowledge Acquisition, Modelling and Management (EKAW99), Dagsthul, Germany, May 1999. Abstract - draft copy (postscript) - BibTex entry |

"Applying Ontological Engineering to Ecological Modelling: Detection of Conceptual Errors" |
Y.Kalfoglou, In this long technical paper, I present a mechanism for detecting conceptual errors. The domain of interest is that of Ecological Modelling and I present 7 different types of conceptual errors in three different ecological models: rabbit-grass energy flow, structural growth, and state transition. A detailed explanation of the checking mechanisms is provided along with an analysis of error types. "Error detection in Specifications based on Ontologies" |
Y.Kalfoglou,
D.Robertson, In this technical paper we elaborate on the details of a generic framework for detecting conceptual errors in specifications using ontological axioms. We present a neat mechanism for transforming the axioms in Normal Form and how these can be executed with a meta-interpreter to check specifications for compliance. An example case borrowed from PIF evaluation using a supply chain scenario is presented. "Error checking in the Process Interchange Format (PIF) Ontology" |

Y.Kalfoglou,
D.Robertson, In this short paper we are exploring an early version of conceptual errors check in specifications using a meta-interpreter, an ontology and its constraints, and exemplar specifications. We sketch an error detection method and elaborate on an example case with the Process Interchange Format (PIF) ontology.
